Tailoring medicines for the genetically diverse African populations
Genetic differences in the expression and activity of drug metabolizing enzymes and transporters can lead to variable responses to treatment. This is in part because mutations in the genes encoding for drug metabolizing enzymes can lead to differences in rates of drug metabolism and thus in in vivo exposure.
Variations in drug response in African populations are not well accounted for despite African populations possessing greater genetic variation relative to other populations worldwide. Coupled with the generally low volume of clinical trials conducted in Africa and absence of African-centric preclinical discovery tools and models, this has contributed to the suboptimal efficacy and safety of some medicines used in African populations.
This lecture will describe strategies towards tailoring medicines for African populations taking into consideration their variable genetics.
